How we measure character: by what a person would actually do under pressure, across four virtues, handed back as their own read. Not a grade. Not an average. Not a clinical instrument.
The four virtues
Courage
Bearing cost and acting rightly under fear, instead of freezing or going reckless.
Wisdom
Seeing honestly and choosing well, instead of what only looks right.
Temperance
Holding the line on appetite and impulse, instead of being pulled by them.
Justice
Giving each person their due, instead of only what serves you.
The principle
Formation = Love × Truth
Character shows up where honest sight meets real care, under cost. Truth without care turns cold; care without truth turns blind. Formation is the two together, held when it is expensive to hold them. That is the idea the whole measure is built on.
How a read works
01Real pressure. You answer what you would actually do in ordinary hard moments: money, conflict, a group, a temptation. There is no right-looking answer to pick.
02A position, not a score. Your answers place you on a gradient across the four virtues. It is a position you can move, never a rank or a percentile.
03Your own mirror. The read reflects your own answers back to you, names the growth edge, and what holding that virtue would cost.
04A first step. One concrete next move. The read is given whole, with no paywall and no email wall.
What it is not
✕It is not validated, clinical, or accredited. No body has validated it, and we do not claim they have. It is early, honest, bounded work.
✕It is not a grade on the person. It is a reading of where a habit holds under pressure today, not a verdict, and not fixed.
✕It is not a self-report of feelings. It scores the choice you say you would make, weighted by what that choice would cost you.
✕It is never an average. Every read is one person's own. We do not blend people into a single number.
One honest note on the ecosystem's own self-measurement: we deliberately do not flatten it into a single figure. When the readings underneath split into more than one population, we keep the shape rather than report a tidy average that would hide it. A number that hides its own spread is not a reading.
